  • Customized nano-coated pulps to optimize fiber surface roughness, surface charges, and bonding strength.  These will reduced beating times,  improving recycled pulp properties.  Modified pulps will produce stronger paper and improve paper making.

Nano-coating of paper and other wood products with ultrathin layers of polymers and nano-particles. This will modify paper wettability for better printing and provide special magnetic or optical properties. Controlled loading and incorporation in paper structure of different materials  for slow release of pharmaceuticals. Structured design of paper structure for specific paper permeability for filters, one-way membranes.

Analytical characterization of samples of pulp, paper and wood products:  Fluorescent-laser-confocal cross-sectional images of fibers and papers with resolution 0.05 micrometer (50 nm) providing both external and internal structural information.  Scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy analyses for surface roughness and paper structure characterization (resolution 10 nm). Surface potential measurements, UV-vis, FTIR and XPS spectroscopic analysis, fiber size distribution.

Permeability modifications of filter paper with ultrathin polymer coating. Development of active paper by incorporation of nano sensors into the paper structure.  Incorporation of biological materials (proteins and DNA) for slow on-demand release.

Development of ultra-thin polymer coatings, incorporation of nano-particles and proteins on paper surfaces with prescribed/needed composition and thickness in the range 5 – 100; nanometers for medical applications.

Drug nanocoating and microencapsulation, colloid stabilization.

Training personal and research scholars in nanotechnology methods and recruiting specialists in nanotechnology. Organizing research symposiums.

Supply of materials and related instruments for emerging high technologies.
